Sexual Assault Allegations Ganguly Refuses to Comment

Dodging queries on the allegations of sexual assault levelled against him, former Supreme Court judge A.K. Ganguly Friday refused to comment on the issue or whether he would step down as head of the West Bengal human rights panel.

Surrounded by clamouring media persons, who repeatedly quizzed him on the allegations, Ganguly kept on repeating: 'I shall not comment on this'.

Ganguly, now chairman of the state human rights commission, was faced with a volley of questions from scribes on the sidelines of a programme here.

He was identified as the judge against whom a young lawyer intern had levelled charges of sexual harassment by a three-member panel that probed the charge.

The report, submitted to Chief Justice P. Sathasivam, also carries the statements of the victim, a young lawyer who had interned under the Supreme Court judge, and that of Ganguly, the sources said.

She had first alleged sexual harassment on Nov 6, in a blog for Journal of Indian Law and Society. Subsequently she repeated the allegation in an interview to Legally India website.

The young lawyer, who is at present working with organization Natural Justice: Lawyers for Communities and Environment, said besides herself she has heard three other girls too were sexually harassed by the same judge.

Managing Editor of Tehelka Resigned today

Managing Editor of Tehelka Shoma Chaudhury resigned today a week after its Editor Tarun Tejpal was exposed as having allegedly sexually assaulting a woman journalist colleague.

Chaudhury's resignation early this morning comes as Goa police appeared to be closing in on Tejpal who has to appear before it by 3 PM today and speculation that she may also be named in the FIR for certain acts of commission and omission after the alleged offence became public.

'Over the past week, I have been accused of an attempt to cover-up and for not standing by my feminist positions. While I accept that I could have done many things differently and in a more measured way, I reject the allegations of a cover-up because in no way could the first actions that were taken be
deemed suppression of any kind.

'As for my feminist positions, I believe I acted in consonance with them by giving my colleague's account precedence over everything else,' Chaudhury said in her resignation letter.

'However, despite this, as a result of what's transpired over the past few days, my integrity has repeatedly been questioned by people from our fraternity and, in fact, by the public at large. I would like to take cognisance of this.

'I have worked hard for Tehelka for many years and what we have stood for is very dear to me and I hold it in high esteem. I do not want questions raised about my integrity to tarnish the image of Tehelka, which it has done in the past week.

'Therefore, I resign as Managing Editor with immediate effect,' Chaudhury said. Ever since the scandal became public Chaudhury, a share holder in Tehelka and associated companies started by Tejpal, was accused of cover up and not taking proper action the case demanded.

Initially, Chaudhury sought to portray it as an internal matter and was more interested in getting an apology from Tejpal to the victim rather than reporting it to police because of the nature of the cognisable offence. Later, she tried to set up an internal complaints committee with Urvashi Butalia, a friend of Tejpal, as its head.

The committee never took off and Butalia also refused to be part of it. Meanwhile, a number of editors resigned from the magazine accusing Chaudhury of not doing justice to the victim and being interested only in protecting Tejpal.

Tejpal, who failed to get any immediate relief on his anticipatory bail petition in the Delhi High Court, was yesterday summoned by the Goa police to appear before it in connection with the probe in the case. DIG of Police O P Mishra refused to discuss their strategy if he does not turn up before the Investigating Officer.

The police may issue a non-bailable warrant against Tejpal if he does not appear before the IO or prolong the questioning till Delhi High Court comes out with its order on his anticipatory bail plea on Friday, experts say.

The police move also came on a day the victim, a former journalist of Tehelka, who was allegedly sexually assaulted in a lift in a five-star hotel in Goa earlier this month, arrived here and recorded her statement under Section 164 of CrPC before a local court.

The statement of the victim under section 164 CrPC is being recorded in a local court here. The process is still on, said Mishra. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had yesterday dismissed Tejpal's accusations that the BJP government in the state was pursuing vendetta against him because of the sting operation conducted by his organisation that unseated party President Bangaru Laxman and other issues.

"Sex. Illicit affairs. Murder. Indian media, which combines British tabloid sensibility with U.S. cable’s cutthroat competitiveness, snapped it up and fed it to a gossip-hungry audience, catapulting the crime to the top of the news cycle and making Aarushi a household name. For months, media feasted on leaks from unnamed police sources. They were scandalous, accusing the Talwars of extra-marital affairs, incest, swinger parties, wife-swapping and an “honour” killing. As the whispers grew louder, the well-to-do professionals morphed into extravagantly wealthy deviants who, if allowed, would buy their way out of murder.

A prime-time television drama added a plot twist, featuring the murder of a rebellious 16-year-old girl whose kohl-rimmed eyes were just like Aarushi’s. The murderer, of course, was the father." Thestar.com -
The murder mystery only served as a source of raising the TRP. The media was neither concerned with the reputation of the thirteen year old nor the bereaved family members. This further complicated the murder mystery because it did everything but plant preconceived notions in the minds of the viewers.Any view contrary to the much believed opinion of parents being the murderers was considered to be wrong.
Noida Double murder mystery is not only a case of a teenager losing her life or a domestic help's decomposed body, found a day after a girl who had everything live for was found dead.It is a story of shattered hopes , it is a story of people who ceased to believe in  Justice , who felt betrayed as Indians. It is the story of an impotent investigation bureau , that was unable to submit an adequate and satisfactory closure report.A closure report that was a  masterpiece of insinuation and self-contradiction.It is a shock that an investigation system can fail so badly.Once , we used to cherish our pride in the country. Now we grieve at the loss of that pride. It is a story where "justice was not only delayed. But also denied."
Even five years later , justice is  a far fetched cry.

More than 50,000 Computer networks with malicious software

The American intelligence service - NSA - infected more than 50,000 computer networks worldwide with malicious software designed to steal sensitive information. Documents provided by former NSA-employee Edward Snowden and seen by this newspaper, prove this.
A management presentation dating from 2012 explains how the NSA collects information worldwide. In addition, the presentation shows that the intelligence service uses ‘Computer Network Exploitation’ (CNE) in more than 50,000 locations. CNE is the secret infiltration of computer systems achieved by installing malware, malicious software.
One example of this type of hacking was discovered in September 2013 at the Belgium telecom provider Belgacom. For a number of years the British intelligence service - GCHQ – has been installing this malicious software in the Belgacom network in order to tap their customers’ telephone and data traffic. The Belgacom network was infiltrated by GCHQ through a process of luring employees to a false Linkedin page.

NSA SPECIAL DEPARTMENT EMPLOYS MORE THAN A THOUSAND HACKERS

The NSA computer attacks are performed by a special department called TAO (Tailored Access Operations). Public sources show that this department employs more than a thousand hackers. As recently as August 2013, the Washington Post published articles about these NSA-TAO cyber operations. In these articles The Washington Post reported that the NSA installed an estimated 20,000 ‘implants’ as early as 2008. These articles were based on a secret budget report of the American intelligence services. By mid-2012 this number had more than doubled to 50,000, as is shown in the presentation NRC Handelsblad laid eyes on.Cyber operations are increasingly important for the NSA. Computer hacks are relatively inexpensive and provide the NSA with opportunities to obtain information that they otherwise would not have access to. The NSA-presentation shows their CNE-operations in countries such as Venezuela and Brazil. The malware installed in these countries can remain active for years without being detected.

‘SLEEPER CELLS’ CAN BE ACTIVATED WITH A SINGLE PUSH OF A BUTTON

The malware can be controlled remotely and be turned on and off at will. The ‘implants’ act as digital ‘sleeper cells’ that can be activated with a single push of a button. According to theWashington Post, the NSA has been carrying out this type of cyber operation since 1998.
The Dutch intelligence services - AIVD and MIVD – have displayed interest in hacking. The Joint Sigint Cyber Unit – JSCU – was created early in 2013. The JSCU is an inter-agency unit drawing on experts with a range of IT skills. This new unit is prohibited by law from performing the type of operations carried out by the NSA as Dutch law does not allow this type of internet searches.

The NSA declined to comment and referred to the US Government. A government spokesperson states that any disclosure of classified material is harmful to our national security.

The role of women in rural development, food production and poverty eradication

This week, UN Women marks three UN observances that reflect women's key role in development, beginning with International Day for Rural Women on 15 October, World Food Day on 16 October and International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on 17 October.
Rural women are key agents for development. They play a catalytic role towards achievement of transformational economic, environmental and social changes required for sustainable development. But limited access to credit, health care and education are among the many challenges they face. These are further aggravated by the global food and economic crises and climate change. Empowering them is essential, not only for the well-being of individuals, families and rural communities, but also for overall economic productivity, given women’s large presence in the agricultural workforce worldwide.
UN Women supports the leadership and participation of rural women in shaping laws, policies and programmes on all issues that affect their lives, including improved food and nutrition security, and better rural livelihoods. Training equips them with skills to pursue new livelihoods and adapt technology to their needs.
Women play a key role in food production and form a large proportion of the agricultural work force globally.
Given equal resources, women could contribute much more. FAO estimates that if women farmers (43 per cent of the agricultural labour force in developing countries) had the same access as men, agricultural output in 34 developing countries would rise by an estimated average of up to 4 per cent. This could reduce the number of undernourished people in those countries by as much as 17 per cent, translating to up to 150 million fewer hungry people.
According to new estimates, about 870 million people, or one in eight worldwide, did not consume enough food on a regular basis to cover their minimum dietary energy requirements over the period 2010 to 2012. The vast majority live in developing countries.
Many of the world’s most poor are women. Poverty eradication is a key challenge for rural women. New poverty estimates from the World Bank show that the proportion of people living on less than USD 1.25 a day fell from 47 per cent in 1990 to 22 per cent in 2010, across every developing region. Yet, 1.2 billion people are still living in extreme poverty.
Coordinated UN action
To help rural women escape poverty, in 2012 UN Women joined with the World Food Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Fund for Agriculture Development to launch a joint programme to empower poor rural women through economic integration and food security initiatives. The initiative aims to empower rural women to claim their rights to land, leadership, opportunities and choices, and to participate in shaping laws, policies and programmes.
Knowledge Gateway
During the High-Level week of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly, UN Women, with support from the Government of Canada, launched the Knowledge Gateway for Economic Empowerment. The new online platform is an open global community for knowledge mobilization, innovation and partnerships. It seeks to re-vitalize women’s economic empowerment by building connections and bringing together people who need resources with those that have them. The portal will feature e-discussions, interviews, videos and other resources on rural women, food and poverty reduction from 15-25 October.

Farewell Speech of Sachin Tendulkar

All my friends. Settle down let me talk, I will get more and more emotional (crowd gets louder as he composes himself). My life, between 22 yards for 24 years, it is hard to believe that that wonderful journey has come to an end, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank people who have played an important role in my life. Also, for the first time in my life I am carrying this list, to remember all the names in case I forget someone. I hope you understand. It's getting a little bit difficult to talk but I will manage.

The most important person in my life, and I have missed him a lot since 1999 when he passed away, my father. Without his guidance, I don't think I would have been standing here in front of you. He gave me freedom at the age of 11, and told me that [I should] chase my dreams, but make sure you do not find shortcuts. The path might be difficult but don't give up, and I have simply followed his instructions. Above all, he told me to be a nice human being, which I will continue to do and try my best. Every time I have done something special [and] showed my bat, it was [for] my father.

My mother, I don't know how she dealt with such a naughty child like me. I was not easy to manage. She must be extremely patient. For a mother, the most important thing is that her child remains safe and healthy and fit. That was what she was most bothered and worried about. She took care of me for the last 24 years that I have played for India, but even before that she started praying for me the day I started playing cricket. She just prayed and prayed and I think her prayers and blessings have given me the strength to go out and perform, so a big thank you to my mother for all the sacrifices.

In my school days, for four years, I stayed with my uncle and aunt because my school was quite far from my home, and they treated me like their son. My aunt, after having had a hard day's play, I would be half asleep and she would be feeding me food so I could go again and play tomorrow. I can't forget these moments. I am like their son and I am glad it has continued to be the same way.

My eldest brother, Nitin, and his family, have always encouraged me. My eldest brother doesn't like to talk much, but the one thing he always told me is that whatever you do, I know you will always give it 100%, and that I have full faith and confidence in you. His encouragement meant a lot to me. My sister, Savita, and her family, was no different. The first cricket bat of my life was presented to me by my sister. It was a Kashmir willow bat. But that is where the journey began. She is one of those many who still continue to fast when I bat, so thank you very much.

Ajit, my brother, now what do I talk about him? I don't know. We have lived this dream together. He was the one who sacrificed his career for my cricket. He spotted the spark in me. And it all started from the age of 11 when he took me to Archrekar sir, my coach, and from there on my life changed. You will find this hard to believe but even last night he called to discuss my dismissal, knowing that there was a remote chance of batting again, but just the habit we have developed, the rapport we have developed, since my birth, has continued and it will continue. Maybe when I'm not playing cricket we will still be discussing technique.

Various things we agreed upon, my technique, and so many technical things which I didn't agree with him, we have had arguments and disagreements, but when I look back at all these things in my life, I would have been a lesser cricketer.

The most beautiful thing happened to me in 1990 when I met my wife, Anjali. Those were special years and it has continued and will always continue that way. I know Anjali, being a doctor; there was a wonderful career in front of her. When we decided to have a family, Anjali took the initiative to step back and say that 'you continue with your cricket and I will take the responsibility of the family'.

Without that, I don't think I would have been able to play cricket freely and without stress. Thanks for bearing with all my fuss and all my frustrations, and all sorts of rubbish that I have spoken. Thanks for bearing with me and always staying by my side through all the ups and downs. You are the best partnership I've had in my life.
Then, the two precious diamonds of my life, Sara and Arjun. They have already grown up. My daughter is 16, my son is 14. Time has flown by. I wanted to spend so much time with them on special occasions like their birthdays, their annual days, their sports day, going on holidays, whatever. I have missed out on all those things. Thanks for your understanding. Both of you have been so, so special to me you cannot imagine. I promise you [that] for 14 and 16 years I have not spent enough time with both of you, but the next 16 years or even beyond that, everything is for you.

My in-laws, Anand Mehta and Annabel, both have been so, so supportive [and] loving and caring. I have discussed on various things in life, generally with them, and have taken their advice. You know, it's so important to have a strong family who is always with you and who are guiding you. Before you start clapping, the most important thing they did was allowing me to marry Anjali, so thank you very much.

In the last 24 years that I have played for India I have made new friends, and before that I have had friends from my childhood. They have all had a terrific contribution. As and when I have called them to come and bowl to me at the nets, they have left their work aside to come and help me. Be it joining me on holidays and having discussions with me on cricket, or how I was a little stressed and wanting to find a solution so I can perform better.
All those moments my friends were with me. Even for when I was injured, I would wake up in the morning because I couldn't sleep and thought that my career was over because of injuries, that is when my friends have woken up at 3 o'clock in the morning to drive with me and make me believe that my career was not over. Life would be incomplete without all those friends. Thanks for being there for me.

My cricket career started when I was 11. The turning point of my career was when my brother (Ajit) took me to Achrekar sir. I was extremely delighted to see him up in the stands. Normally he sits in front of the television and he watches all the games that I play. When I was 11/12, those were the days when I used to hop back on his scooter and play a couple of practice matches a day. The first half the innings I would be batting at Shivaji Park, the second half, at some other match in Azad Maidan. He would take me all over Mumbai to make sure I got match practice.

On a lighter note, in the last 29 years, sir has never ever said 'well played' to me because he thought I would get complacent and I would stop working hard. Maybe he can push his luck and wish me now, well done on my career, because there are no more matches, sir, in my life. I will be witnessing cricket, and cricket will always stay in my heart, but you have had an immense contribution in my life, so thank you very much.

My cricket for Mumbai started right here on this ground, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), which is so dear to me. I remember landing from New Zealand at four o'clock in the morning, and turning up for a game here at eight o'clock just because I wanted to be a part of Mumbai cricket, and not that somebody forced me. That was for the love of Mumbai cricket, and thank you very much. The president is here so thank you very much, along with your team, for taking care of me and looking after my cricket.

The dream was obviously to play for India, and that is where my association with BCCI started. BCCI was fantastic, right from my debut they believed in my ability and selecting me into the squad at the age of 16 was a big step, so thanks to all the selectors for having faith in me and the BCCI for giving me the freedom to express myself out in the middle. Things would have been different if you had not been behind me, and I really appreciate your support. Especially when I was injured, you were right with me and making sure that all the treatments were taken care of, and that I got fit and fine and playing [right] back for India.

The journey has been special, the last 24 years, I have played with many senior cricketers, and even before that there were many senior cricketers with whom I watched on television. They inspired me to play cricket, and to play in the right way. Thanks to all those senior cricketers, and unfortunately I have not been able to play with them, but I have high regards for all their achievements and all their contributions.

We see it on the mega-screen, Rahul, Laxman, Sourav, and Anil, who is not here, and my team-mates right here in front me. You are like my family away from home. I have had some wonderful times with you. It is going to be difficult to not be part of the dressing room, sharing those special moments. All the coaches for their guidance, it has been special for me. I know when MS Dhoni presented me the 200th Test match cap on Day One morning. I had a brief message for the team. I would like to repeat that. I just feel that all of us are so, so fortunate and proud to be part of the Indian cricket team and serving the nation.

Knowing all of you guys, I know you will continue to serve the nation in the right spirit and right values. I believe we have been the lucky ones to be chosen by the Almighty to serve this sport. Each generation gets this opportunity to take care of this sport and serve it to the best of our ability. I have full faith in you to continue to serve the nation in the right spirit and to the best of your ability, to bring all the laurels to the country. All the very best.

I would be failing in my duties if I did not thank all the doctors, the physios, the trainers, who have put this difficult body together to go back on the field and be able to play. The amount of injuries that I have had in my career, I don't know how you have managed to keep me fit, but without your special efforts, it would never have happened. The doctors have met me at weird hours. I mean I have called them from Mumbai to Chennai, Mumbai to Delhi, I mean wherever. They have just taken the next flight and left their work and families to be with me, which has allowed me to play. So a big thank you to all three of you for keeping me in good shape.

My dear friend, late Mark Mascarenhas, my first manager. We unfortunately lost him in a car accident in 2001, but he was such a well-wisher of cricket, my cricket, and especially Indian cricket. He was so passionate. He understood what it takes to represent a nation and gave me all the space to go out and express myself, and never pressurised me to do this ad or promotion or whatever the sponsors demanded. He took care of that and today I miss him, so thank you Mark for all your contribution.

My current management team, WSG, for repeating what Mark has done, because when I signed the contract I exactly told them what I want from them, and what it requires to represent me. They have done that and respected that.

Someone who has worked closely with me for 14 years is my manager, Vinod Nayudu. He is more like my family and all the sacrifices, spending time away from his family for my work, has been special, so big thank you to his family as well for giving up so much time for my work with Vinod.

In my school days, when I performed well, the media backed me a lot. They continue to do that till this morning. Thank you so much to the media for supporting and appreciating my performances. It surely had a positive effect on me. Thank you so much to all the photographers as well for those wonderfully captured moments that will stay with me for the rest of my life, so a big thank you to all the photographers.

I know my speech is getting a bit too long (crowd roars with 'noooo'), but this is the last thing I want to say. I want to thank all the people here who have flown in from various parts of the world, and have supported me endlessly, whether I scored a 0 or a 100-plus. Your support was so dear to me and meant a lot to me. Whatever you have done for me.

I know I have met so many guys who have fasted for me, prayed for me, done so much for me. Without that life wouldn't have been like this for me. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, and also say that time has flown by rather quickly, but the memories you have left with me will always be with me forever and ever, especially "Sachin, Sachin" which will reverberate in my ears till I stop breathing. Thank you very much. If I have missed out on saying something, I hope you understand. Goodbye.

Peeping across the Wagah border

I have lived in Lahore for several years and visited it scores of times. I had the opportunity to explore it through different angels–its historical beauty, past and present grandeur, museums, zoos, beautiful mosques, historical sprawling gardens, parks, shopping centers, food street, restaurants, educational institutions but never got to visit the Wagah border between India and Pakistan to watch the spectacular ceremony of flag-wrapping and the cross-border ‘friendly’ acts and gestures by soldiers from the two countries.
It was a sweltering, hot day in mid June this year, when I reached there.
The mercury touched 47-48c in Lahore during day time which coupled with humidity felt even higher. The humidity effect increases the heat considerably. Witnessing my enthusiasm, my hosts kindly arranged for my visit to the Wagah border.
I have heard a lot about this ceremony on both sides of the border through pictures of friends and family. I am not sure that if this is just a made-up culture in these two countries or this takes place in other parts and borders of the world too. I have crossed USA and Canadian borders numerous times but never witnessed anything so bizarre and spectacular. Over there on both sides the custom and immigration just mind their own business. Sometimes too much vigilance makes you miserable and cautious for none of your fault.
At the Pearson International Airport, Toronto, the USA starts right there with a welcoming board right on the Canadian soil and you go through the US immigration and customs right there.
Lahore has changed in the past few years–a bit transformed rather–developed with a brand new ring road which bypasses the big city’s rush. It is a 3-lane wide freeway type of road with exits and entries. This has streamlined most of Lahore’s unruly traffic.
There is a separate road for the recently launched Metro bus service. This is just unique, like a railway or train service. I was told that the unruly riders on the bus broke up the sliding doors and caused a lot of damage. Hopefully they are educated or trained enough now to embark and disembark in a more civilized manner.
I also saw some other big buses plying as local transport in the city. Looking forward to the days when a decent or once again a double-decker bus service is introduced in Islamabad and Rawalpindi area.
The road to Wagah was clear, we crossed Jalo. I had been to Jalo Park many times but it now made me look forward to Wagah. I and my young companion were received warmly at the gate by troops of the Punjab Rangers, providing us VIP treatment and protocol.
I was impatient to see the land behind the gates, the land of our neighbors or the so-called enemy most of the time in my lifetime. As soon as I gulped my sandwich and tea, we opened the door and selected our seats close to the gate. It was great excitement and demonstration of patriotism on both side.
The ceremony started with the recitation of Holy Quran, the Indians narrated some thing too in Hindi or Sanskrit. On our side, we heard Arabic and Urdu slogans, Pakistan Zindabaad, Naara-e-Takbir Allahu Akbar, Pakistan ka Matlab KIA? Lailaha ill Allah, Muhammad Ur Rasool Ulla.
While on the other side it was a mix of Hindi and Sanskrit –Bharat Mata JI ki Jai, Jai Hind and so on. We were playing our national songs in Urdu, Pashto and Punjabi. They were playing Chak de India and many more. It seemed quite a bit of competition with applause and slogans from the cheering crowd.
We look quite a bit the same on both sides. Yet we are different–in religion, in culture and maybe most of the values. Then our national anthems were sung on both sides. We are two nations and that is what the two nation theory is all about.
The Indian side was jam-packed and our side and stands were a bit empty. But the excitement and slogans were at a very high pitch.
Then came the two men dressed up in Pakistani uniform with big flags in their hands, swirling around chanting slogans and showed their skills and feats along with the drum beaters with flags on sides.
It was an absolute spectacle, a great entertainment to watch and enjoy. After the announcement from both countries the parade started. Our soldiers, tall and sturdy wearing black militia uniforms of traditional shalwar kameez with ceremonial turbans and the Indians in their khakis with their orange turbans a bit shorter in size. Ultimately the gates got opened on both sides.
On our gates it was clearly inscribed ‘Pakistan’ in Urdu and on Indian side I’m sure it was Bharat in Hindi because their script is a bit similar to Bangla script, which I tried to decipher. I was looking at the Indian soil for the first time in my life.
The same land as ours; however it is of my neighboring country with so many links of heritage and past grandeur of Muslim history. It was the same kind of feeling when I visited Torkham border and saw the Afghan soil for the first time. I have traveled thousands of miles but never to our neighboring countries.
The same land, the same earth, they had just reaped their wheat crops, like we did in Pakistan. Don’t know why I didn’t get a chance to visit India yet? Of course, it’s a vast country with so much to explore and watch.
The acts and movements of troops were a treat to watch and admire. The whole crowd heaving with joy and excitement. The wrapping up of the flags for the night was another feat with turns, twists and actions. They brought down both the flags –Pakistani and Indian–down and hold them in mid of the way with great honor and regard, folding them artistically. All the time I was busy taking pictures and enjoying every moment of it. All of a sudden the time was over for this entire hustle bustle, weird sounds, announcements, chanting slogans and the gates were closed.
The lady from Pakistan Punjab Rangers accompanying us gave us a tour of the surrounding area, the map of Pakistan, the miniatures with all the land marks. The barbed wire that divides the two countries stood firm. Two of the soldiers on both sides riding horses were ready for a photo op. She told us that this is the crossing for Dosti bus service between India and Pakistan. The trading trucks unburden their luggage at a big custom ground, that is brought by Pakistani trucks and trailers and same is done with Indian trucks.
We both are sovereign, dignified nations and we should remain like this. Respecting and valuing each other’s sovereignty and no more interference, terrorism and no more wars please! The world has gone so old now; hence we should learn living like peaceful and friendly neighbors–respecting and valuing each other.

The Original Gujarat

The history of Gujarat stretches much beyond and much before Modi, and it was not always based on Muslim-bashing and hard Hindutva
Khalid Akhter Delhi
Chief Minister Narendra Modi highlighted Gujarat's dazzling economic success in his election campaign and then quickly switched on to time-tested xenophobic hardline — defending Sohrabuddin's fake encounter as a metaphor for Muslims and communal polarisation. His loyalists in Ahmedabad and Delhi, including in the media, have eulogised him as the 'development role model'. "Gujarat has risen as a strategic economic power to India's advantage with strong fundamentals of international economic benchmarks," Modi said in a news conference. Modi is being given the credit for a 'booming Gujarat'.
True, Gujarat has a highly successful economy. According to a recent study by the Reserve Bank of India, Gujarat stood first in the country with investments of $17.8 billion in 2006-07 or 25.8 per cent of India's total investment of $69 billion during the year. Its per capita GDP is 2.4 times the Indian average. It is India's most industrialised state and accounts for 20 per cent of the country's industrial output, 25 per cent of textile production, 40 per cent of pharmaceutical production and 47 per cent of petrochemical production. The state accounts for 21 per cent of India's exports. Impressive figures indeed!
However, there is madness in glorifying Modi for every good thing happening in Gujarat. Modi is credited even for the good rains in the last few years (what about the man-made devastating floods?), for the sensex zooming up, booming agricultural income (what about farmer suicides?), real estate boom and middle class millionaires (what about the urban poor and the slums?). A BJP worker claims in a typical Gujarati manner, "Modi shuknaiyal che”. (Modi's rule is auspicious.)"
There is an uncanny element of truth in this glorification of one man's megalomania. The history of Gujarat stretches much beyond and much before Modi, and it was not always based on Muslim-bashing and hard Hindutva, nor were human carnages celebrated with such gusto as in the contemporary era. Hence, to give credit to a single individual for this longstanding economic growth would be discrediting the vibrant and resilient Gujarati community, which has had a long history of being successful traders both inland and overseas since antiquity.
Historically, Lothal and Dholavira were great architecturally planned and flourishing societies and important trade centres during the Harappan civilisation 5000 years ago. Lothal's dock - one of the world's oldest — connected the city to an ancient course of the Sabarmati river on the trade route between the Harappan cities in Sindh and the peninsula of Saurashtra. It was a vital and thriving trade centre in ancient times, with its products reaching the far corners of West Asia and Africa.
In ancient and medieval times, Gujarat had 52 active ports of which Bharuch, Khambhat and Surat were the busiest. From the 11th to the 17th century, Bharuch was at the height of its glory. In the 15th century, as many as 4,000 ships passed through Bharuch. Next to Bharuch, Khambhat was a prominent port during this period.
In the 17th century, Surat surpassed both Bharauch and Khambaat. Throughout the second half of the 17th century, it served as an emporium of trade, both inland and sea-borne, and was the chief port of the Mughal empire. Commenting on its economic importance and strategic geographic situation, Dutch historian H Terpstra says, “No wonder, if one thought of the magnificent central position of Surat — westwards were the Persian Gulf and Red Sea for navigation; north eastwards, one could quickly reach by land the fertile Ganges plain, which stretched eastwards to the rich land of Bengal.”
Surat had its religious significance as well. Pilgrims went to Mecca for Haj from Surat. Hence, Surat was known as Meccaidwar, Meccabari, Babul Mecca.
The 17th century was an era of prosperity for Surat. Two main sources contributing to its wealth were foreign commerce and domestic manufacture. Traders from all over the world came to Surat. Muslim, Arab, Turkish, Iranian, Jewish, Dutch, Portuguese and English traders had settled in Surat. In addition, there were immigrants and exiles, who were assimilated in the state. The most striking example is that of the Parsis who made Surat their home in the 11th century.
There were also Muslim traders, such as Virji Vora, Mulla Mahammad Ali and Ahmed Chameli. The English had dealings with Virji Vohra since 1619 and he was the East India Company's largest creditor. Haji Zahid Beg and Haji Kasim were other rich Muslim merchants whose property was plundered by Shivaji during his attack on Surat in 1664.
Gujaratis played an important role in the economy of India even after the establishment of British rule. In the 19th century, it was the people of Gujarat, especially the Parsis, who developed Bombay as a port, which, till recently, accounted for 40 per cent of India's marine trade. Again, it was a Gujarati family that established the first Indian shipping company in Bombay in 1919: the Scindia Steam Navigation Company. In the early 20th century, the Bania community established 66 textile mills in Ahmedabad, making it 'the Manchester of India'.

Box 1 : Southern shores of the Chettiars
The Chettiars (also Chetty, Chetti, Setty, Chitty, Shetty and Shettigar) is a title commonly used by people of south Indian origin in India and abroad. It is usually derived from trading social groups. Nattukottai Chettiars are people of Indian origin, well known for their financial dealings and hospitality. They are Hindus and worship the Shiva and Muruga deities of the Hindu faith. Many of the Nattukotai Chettiars proclaim the fact that they are fervent Shaivites by wearing a rudraksham fruit usually set in gold around their necks. Of late, wealthy Chettiars have spent large sums upon several of the famous Shaivite shrines, notably at Chidambram, Madura and Tiruvannamalai.
The Nattukotai Chettiars hail from a place called Chettinad in south India, an area situated in the southeastern region of Tamil Nadu. Originally, Chettinad was the name given to a group of 96 villages situated in the Devakottah revenue division of Ramnad district and the Pudukottah revenue division of Tiruchirapallai district. Edgar Thurstan, in his voluminous work, Castes and Tribes of Southern India, has compiled a vivid and interesting account of Nattukotai Chettiars.
Chettiars belong to a prolific business community which moved out of India to foreign lands like Burma, Ceylon, Java, Sumatra, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam (Saigon) and spread their culture in those lands. They travelled to these countries for the sole purpose of making money. They did a considerable amount of business in trade and money-lending in these countries. Nattukottai Chettiars are basically 'bankers' who lend money at nominal interest. They are considered as the pioneers of modern banking. They are the first to introduce what is called pattru (debit), varavu (credit), selavu (expenditure), laabam (profit), nashtam (loss) — which are all, collectively, known as ivnthogai (trial balance).
Chettiars are noted for their gifts to temples and public charities and have generously contributed to the restoration of famous temples in south India, especially at Madurai. In all important towns of those countries outside India where the Chettiars have settled permanently or for business purposes, they have established their own temples and charitable organisations. The members of the community contribute annually a certain percentage of their profits or the capital invested, for the maintenance of their temples and institutions. They have also spent large sums of money in establishing centers of religious learning, poor houses, hospitals, schools and colleges in India. Because of their wealth and money-lending, Edgar Thurstan writing in 1909 has called them the 'Jews of south India'.

Box 2: Sectors to watch out for in 2008
The Indian economy is ready to take a huge leap. More people are investing in various sectors. People are ready to take risks and explore new areas and sectors. Sectors like real estate, infrastructure, healthcare, energy renewal have contributed greatly to this facelift. Riches await those involve in these sectors

Real Estate
The real estate sector has witnessed enormous growth. There are many factors for this. With increasing growth in other sectors like retail, finance, IT, BPO and telecom, there is a boom in real estate too. As the economy curve is rising high, this sector is deriving all the advantage from it. The right environment and liberal and transparent government policies have encouraged both domestic and foreign companies to invest. Moreover, selling and buying land in the current scenario is one of the most profitable and flourishing businesses in India. Add to this a huge demand for property, increasing price value and interest of investors, and it's big boom time for this business.
Telecom
Telecom has emerged as a very powerful industry. Back in 1980s, this sector was owned and managed by the government. With the revolution in telecom industry worldwide, policy reforms and introduction of this industry to private players, the industry witnessed a major transformation. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) were formed as a result. Today, the Indian telecom industry is the fourth largest in Asia and eighth largest in the world. There are various policies under which the remotest areas are covered effectively.
Introduction to the cellular world has opened new doors. India has cheap call rates, fast growth of subscribers and availability of cheap handsets. The ministry of telecom is planning yet another New Year gift - a review of tariffs will be considered in order to cut down the cost of text messages, local calls and provide relief in roaming charges.
Pharmaceuticals
Pharmaceuticals is another sector that saw significant growth in recent years. The low cost of production, strong technology, world-class educational institutes, a growing economy and increasing purchasing power are major factors that have contributed to the growth of this industry. Manufacturers have the liberty of producing any drug approved by the Drug Control Authority.
Finance
The financial sector is witnessing rapid transformation, the results of which can be seen in the stock market. The increasing interest of domestic and foreign investors has fuelled economic growth. Banking, insurance, mutual funds and off-shore funds have launched many policies and services meeting customers' requirements. Big Industrial giants have also set their foot on equity funds and other financial services.
Windmill
Wind energy has emerged as a successful source of alternative energy in the renewal energy sector. There has been enormous growth in this industry in the past few years and is counted as one of the fastest growing sectors. India stands fourth in the world in wind energy and plays a crucial part in global wind energy industry. The wind energy sector in India has a capacity of 7660.2 MW approximately. However, the estimated utilisation of wind energy for power generation is that of 65,000 MW.
With energy crisis and increasing threat to environment, many countries have shown inclination in this field. Windmill has become a first choice for energy generation as it is clean, renewable and inexhaustible.
